Hamsptead Canopy

Entrance Canopy to new residential retirement homes in Hampstead, London.

Project developers Riverstone employed us directly to create the main front entrance canopy. They had a digital concept visual that we turned into reality.

Drawing on lots of experience of previous projects to develop the manufacture approach and details.

Each 'tree column' consisted of four 200x200mm curved timber beams with a central steel post and fins that the timbers dowled onto with stainless pins. These then supported the central cross beams, again 200x200mm section and a PFC steel ring beam. On top of this was rafters, boards and a sedum greenroof. With stepped facade around the outside with curved profile cut and steambent corners.

All manufactured by us using UK grown Douglas Fir.

This was two years in the making, and a project like this doesn't happen without a great team. so thanks go to everyone involved, including:

Joe Wastaff for turning my design intent into workable drawings

Iain Thew for Structural Engineering

Owen at Sommerscales Timber

John Vardy for making the trees

Wayne and Steve Tyree for steel fabrication

Chris Pocock for telehander driving and helping with the test construction

Stuart from Askey Transport for helping with site installation using the hiab crane

All the handspring crew for there positive energy during long hours of work making, finishing and installing the shelter.
