Bristol Zoo Forest Bathing Bench

A new type of bench, one to lie back on and appreciate the wonder of the forest and bath in the sounds, smells and aerosols that trees generously share around [see Sustainability Manifesto for more on all this]. Bristol Zoo came to us with a concept design, made from lazer cut marine ply with lots of exposed end grain, and lots of uncomfortable looking gaps! We refuse to use marine ply and try to make comfortable, durable structures from UK grown solid wood. So we redesigned the project, with large timber elements jointed into one another, following the same section profile and overall plan shape. All held off the ground on curved steel box sections. It was quite tricky to make, involved a bit of head scratching and trial and error and a fair amount of skill and so took longer than planned but we are very happy with the result.
